- <p> It's been more than 10 years since MAURICE SENDAK's last book
- of dark enchantments for children, Outside over There, caused
- the usual fuss over whether his imagination was too dark for
- his young readers. His latest, We Are All in the Dumps with
- Jack and Guy, is set in the darkest place on earth: the grim
- world of the homeless. Based on two rhymes by Mother Goose,
- the book tells the story of a kidnapped infant who finds a family
- of sorts with Jack and Guy, two homeless con men but kind con
- men who live in a shantytown populated by children wearing newspapers.
- Homeless children are "a potent contemporary image," says Sendak,
- adding that parents who shield their kids from such matters
- leave them defenseless to deal with life's misfortunes. And
- in light of daily reports of child abuse and homelessness, Sendak
- finds Jack and Guy bright indeed. "My little book seems very
- innocent to me," he says. "After all, it has a happy ending--which is most unlikely."
